Lance Corporal Michael Campbell, D Company, 3rd Battalion, The Royal Welsh
23 July 2015
Mike enlisted into the Army Reserves on 23 April 2002 and joined D Company, 3rd Battalion, The Royal Welsh in Colwyn Bay.
Michael served on various tours including Iraq and Afghanistan. Whilst on patrol, Michael was engaged by accurate, heavy and sustained enemy fire. During the contact Michael was hit while crossing a road.
Despite being wounded Mike continued to suppress the enemy drawing fire onto himself so that the remainder of his unit could cross an open and exposed area to get into better cover.
Sadly Michael died from his injury 3 years later after fighting so hard to recover.
This portrait is my gift for his widow Chris and prints have been ordered for Michaels parents and family.
When I asked her about her husband she said, Michael was a loving and caring husband and a great dad to my son . He was shayne,s inspiration in joining the army and is doing well. He loved camping and indoor rock climbing and he loved pottering about in his shed . There was nothing he wouldnt put his hands too and is missed everyday.
Thank you to my mum and sister for buying me the pastels to complete this portrait and to forces support for covering the mounting printing and postage costs.
I really struggled with the initial photo as it was so over exposed I couldn’t see a lot of definition but as was Chrissie’s favourite photo I was determined to make it work. And completed it using unison pastels on pastel mat board.
